Your Aging Camcorder You've had your camcorder for 8 + years and now, seems like for no reason, it won't work correctly anymore. Maybe there are lines in your recorded picture, perhaps no sound, or the viewfinder has lines or seems to light or to dark. When the camcorder starts to age the capacitors lose value and sometimes start to leak electrolyte which can create many symptoms and eventually leads to cascading failures. Is it repairable? Most of the time, yes. All radial and surface mount capacitors are replaced, any adjustments and alignments are done, all items that wear with time are replaced. (could be belts, rollers, etc) The repair price varies from model to model due the difference in the number or capacitors. The range could be from $200 to $300. In a small percentage, the cap leakage ruins the boards and board replacement usually makes the repair uneconomical. Is it worth repairing? Many of our customers think so. Many options that are on the older camcorders are not available today. Some were very expensive and are just worth a repair. A camcorder that will give you years of service is still an investment of $600 to $800. They also have different options like still pictures that you can upload to your computer.
